Getafe strike very late to earn dramatic draw against Cadiz
Despite picking up only one point from a possible 15 available on their travels in recent weeks, Getafe started the brighter of these two sides, who are both threatened with relegation.
After a neat spell of possession, the visitors tested Cadiz goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma in the opening stages, as striker Munir El Haddadi’s shot was expertly saved.
The home side offered their first shot on target on 17 minutes when Theo Bongonda’s low shot was easily saved.
Getafe very nearly took the lead as they increased the pressure, Ledesma was called into action twice within minutes, firstly he punched a dangerous cross into the box away before a blistering strike by Djene saw the Argentine keeper block again.
Then he somehow managed to block a Nemanja Maksimovic volley, plus the follow-up, as Getafe looked the more likely to score.
Typically, despite soaking up all the visiting pressure, it was Cadiz who opened the scoring before the break when Iza Carcelen’s delightful cross was powerfully headed in at the back post by Ruben Sobrino’s second league goal of the campaign.
Early into the second period, Cadiz nearly doubled their lead when Roger Marti went close, but failed to hit the target. Bongonda skied a delightful corner kick routine as the hosts again went close to scoring a second goal and sealing the three points.
Getafe were given a lifeline before the hour mark as they were awarded a penalty via VAR as Enes Unal was clipped in the box.
The Turkish striker stepped up and scored his 11th LaLiga goal of the season by sending Ledesma the wrong way.
Cadiz had their chances to win the game and none more so than Sergi Guardiola, but the striker fired over the bar.
With 10 minutes to go, the home side were given a penalty when Domingos Duarte handled in the area and was subsequently sent off for a second bookable offence. Ruben Alcaraz coolly slotted the penalty home.
Dramatically, in the 12th minute of stoppage time, Getafe were awarded their second penalty of the game as Pacha Espino handled in the area.
Unal made no mistake and rescued a point for 10-man Getafe.
The home side were also reduced to ten men as Carcelen was sent off in the commotion following the late equaliser.
