Freiburg and Hoffenheim share honours
The two sides traded chances on the break in a wide-open affair in the first half. But with points on the line at the top of the table, the goalkeepers were on top form and kept the scoreline untouched. Despite the back-and-forth nature of the occasion, the first half finished with zero big chances created by either set of attacking players. However, the pace of play made it seem almost certain that defences would be stretched as the game wore on.
As promised, scoring chances flowed in the second period of play, but much to the chagrin of the neutrals, the shooting boots appeared to be missing for both sets of players. Andrej Kramarić looked set to open the scoring in style when his curling shot beat the outstretched hand of Mark Flekken, but the shot careened narrowly wide of the post.
Kramarić’s finessed effort was arguably the closest either team would come to snatching all three points. However, as neither club are perennial top four contenders in the German top-flight, their shared presence in the thick of the Champions League race at the first international break is an encouraging sight.
The scoreless result came as a shock in a game rife with attacking play, but with the Breisgau-Brasilianer coming into the night tied with Borussia Möchengladbach for the best defensive record in the league, another clean sheet will come as no surprise.
