Josip Iličić marks emotional return with goal for old club
The 34-year-old has faced personal battles over the last few years, seemingly stemming back to the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Papu Gomez, who played with Iličić at Atalanta, has previously said the former Slovenia international suffered with depression in 2020 after catching the virus.
Manager Gian Piero Gasperini also spoke sympathetically about the forward's mental health issues earlier this year, but the club agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent on August 31st.
Iličić made one appearance for Atalanta between January 12th and the termination of his contract.
Last month he then signed for Maribor in the Slovenian top flight, where he first represented the club in 2010.
The Serie A hero finally made his second debut for 'the Vijoličasti' over the weekend, coming off the bench and scoring - a penalty-kick against Mura in the 89th minute.
Iličić and his team-mates were elated after the goal and celebrated with the home fans, making for some very emotional scenes.
The forward could be in action again soon as Maribor are slated to host Krka in the Slovenian Cup later this week.
