Liverpool keep their cool to freeze Wolves out of the FA Cup
After the original tie at Anfield saw VAR controversially deny Wolves a late winner, and subsequently force this evening’s replay, revenge may have been on the minds of Julen Lopetegui’s troops, and they wasted no time in taking the game to a Reds side still reeling from humbling defeats at Brentford and Brighton. But sub-zero temperatures didn’t impede Jürgen Klopp’s under-fire side from launching their own counter-offensive.
In particular, Liverpool’s James Milner - boasting more FA Cup appearances than the rest of his team combined - defied his years to dictate play in the middle of the park. However, it was the innovation and impudence of youth that gave Liverpool a precious lead after just 13 minutes. Elliott had already made several dangerous runs before finally flaunting his true skills, taking on an outpaced Wolves defence to fire past José Sá from distance, with the Portuguese goalkeeper somewhat out of position as he grasped at thin air.
Molineux expected a response, and they got one, though Adama Traoré probably should have done better when sent through on goal as HT loomed. The hosts carried their ascendency into the second half too, but struggled to create opportunities, with Liverpool’s backline defending valiantly despite the continued absence of the dependable Virgil van Dijk.
For British viewers, the BBC’s HT coverage may have set pulses racing, but both sides provided little in the way of goalmouth action after taking the lead. Though considering their recent midfield issues, Liverpool could find solace in the performances of Thiago Alcântara and Stefan Bajčetić. Playing at the opposite ends of their careers, the duo combined to wrestle back control from the centre of the park, and subdue Wolves whenever they threatened to rally.
Despite new Wolves signing Matheus Cunha wildly shooting over in the final minutes, the ease in which Liverpool got over the line may have had them pinching themselves after a difficult campaign, with Wolves barely testing Liverpool’s cup keeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Overall, Klopp will be satisfied with his side, as the reigning FA Cup holders sealed a win in a competition that may represent their best chance of silverware this season.
