MacIntyre clinches Italian Open title after playoff victory against Fitzpatrick
Robert MacIntyre (26) won his second career European DP World Tour title in Rome after beating Matthew Fitzpatrick in a playoff, following a superb final round at the Italian Open.
Fitzpatrick forced the playoff after a birdie on the final hole, but the Scotsman beat the US Open champion, who was leading after three rounds, on the first extra hole.
MacIntyre entered the day three shots behind the leader but surged into the lead thanks to six birdies on the opening nine. However, he soon lost the lead when he dropped three strokes, while Fitzpatrick picked up three strokes in two holes after a run of ten pars in a row.
The tug-of-war then continued until the 18th hole and a shoot-out had to settle the score on the course where next year's Ryder Cup will be played.
