Girona fans and players enjoyed a magical evening. Years, and even decades, will go by and the four goals scored against Real Madrid, the European champions, will still be remembered in Montilivi.

Valentin 'Taty' Castellanos was the hero of the match with his four goals and is now, forever, written into the history of the Catalan club.

"It has been a dream night, I never imagined this," he said. "Thank you to my family and my people in Mendoza.

"We played a great game against a great rival. It was a dream to score against Madrid but to score four... I couldn't have imagined it.

"I'm very happy for everything - for me and for the team - we are talking about the best in the world but we competed very well."

Michel, the Girona manager, tried to conceal the euphoria. "We had a great mentality to know how to suffer at the beginning when they came out being far superior," he said.

"We looked for the goal when we had the ball, we knew what we wanted to do, we were brave. Today it all came together. The players deserve a win like this."

Efficiency, the key

"We tried to stop them as well as possible because Vinicius alone can sink you," the coach continued.

"We had to make the first two or three good passes and the first drive to get past opponents. They were all very good. We were very effective and scoring the first chances you get gives you a lot of confidence.

"To achieve this, you have to be very good and they have to be below their level. And today we had both

"Apart from the goals, Taty has always given us work. We are a small team and we don't live on goals alone. He is important because of all the work he does. Against Barca, he missed a goal and it looked like the world was closing in on him, and today look at him. He has done everything perfectly."

Arnau's intelligence

"Arnau is the most intelligent player in the squad at the age of 20," added Michel of his young defender.

"He knows when he has to do what he has to do. He has suffered with Vinicius, but he is very intelligent and he has done everything perfectly.

"With 41 points, we are very close to salvation. I don't dare to say for sure, but today we have taken a giant step forward. I think we're going to make it."
