17:05 CET - Another three-set thriller in the deserts of the UAE as Yulia Putintseva and Petra Martic played out a topsy-turvy encounter under the lights. Putinseva won the first set 6-4, but her Croatian opponent hit back in emphatic style, taking the second 6-0. The Kazakh star was not to be outdone, winning the final set 6-2 and marching on to the next round.

15:15 CET - Karolina Pliskova got off to a good start in the UAE, defeating Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 6-4. Lauren Davis, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Karolina Muchova, and Ana Bogdan were all victorious and through to the round of 16.

14:11 CET - WTA's Middle East stay has moved on to Dubai where a raft of opening rounds have already taken place. Beatriz Haiddad Maia (26) has been upset by Sorana Cirstea (32) in three sets 4-6, 7-6, 7-5. Elswhere, Veronika Kudermetova (25) was also knocked out - she was beaten by Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina (26), also in three sets.
